Senior Programs

Service With Love

Want to live safely and securely? Are you age 55 or older, a resident of Brownstown, living alone or as a couple? Then the Service With Love Program is for you! Friendly Reassurance is an organized program which has telephone contact with senior citizens. This is especially beneficial for those seniors who live alone, are home bound, alone, or suffering from a life threatening condition. Calls are made MondayFriday in the morning. If you are interested in registering and meet the above requirements, please call (734) 675-0920 to request a registration form.

Senior Chore Program

The purpose of the Senior Chore Program is to assist low to moderate income senior citizens with chores around the house, and minor routine home maintenance projects. In order to help seniors maintain their independence and continue to live in their own home.

Eligibility:

  • Must be age 62 or above
  • Must be a Brownstown resident who owns and lives in your home at least 12 months.
  • Must have an income at or below $24,450 for 1 person, or $27,450 for two people in the household.

Services available include grass trimming, weed trimming, snow removal, gutter clearing, and other home maintenance projects.

Documentation Needed to Apply:

  • Proof of residency: Valid drivers license or State ID showing current address.
  • Proof of homeownership: Copy of deed or most recent tax bill.
  • Proof of income tax or tax credit statement; if no taxes filed; then income or W-2s as it applies to you.

Travel Club

New trips are announced offered at the monthly Travel Club Meeting which is held the second Monday of the month. Brownstown residents can join the Travel Club for discounts on travel and get first news of new trips. Membership is $10 per year. Join us to learn about our new trips. Any senior may travel with us; you do not have to be a member.

Foot Doctor

Call Brownstown Recreation at (734) 675-0920 for your appointment time.

Dr. Wilbur DPM of Mobile Foot Care P.C. will be at the Center every other month to provide our seniors with the foot care they need in the convenience of the Community Center location. There is no charge to you. Your Medicare and/or insurance will be billed. Dr. Wilbur can provide treatment of corns, calluses, arthritis, fungus, ingrown nails, diabetic feet, chronic wounds, infections, and more. Dr. Wilbur also does in home foot care for seniors. If you cannot make it to the Center, you can call (313) 884-3750 for an in-home appointment.

Maintain fitness forever! Enjoy a slower pace that focuses on specific exercises for arthritis, range of motion, flexibility, endurance, strength, balance and relaxation. Adapt exercise variations to your own individual level of fitness, while listening to music from the past!

Bowling

Come Bowl with us at Flat Rock Lanes each Friday at 1:00 pm. No needs to sign-up just show up and bowl. For more information call (734) 675-0920.

Wayne County Congregate Meals

Join us for lunch Monday through Friday at 12 noon for congregate meals at the Brownstown Community Center. You must call (734) 675-0920 24 hours in advance to reserve your meal. The suggested donation amount is $2.25.

Senior/Disabled Transportation Program

Eligibility:

  • Brownstown Township resident.
  • Age 60 or older or disabled unable to drive due to medical reasons.
  • Seniors who can drive may use the Sr. Bus, however, priority is given to those who cannot.

Before transportation can be provided:

  • All passengers must complete an Application/Emergency Medical ID Form listing pertinent medical information that may be necessary in case of an emergency and also waives responsibility of the Township for any injury a person may incur while utilizing the transportation program.
  • All passengers must provide a copy of a valid picture ID.
  • Any passenger who is not age 60 or older must provide documentation from their physician stating that they have a disability that causes them to be unable to drive.
  • After we receive these items, we will send you an approval letter along with an ID card. You will need to show the driver the ID card when you use the transportation services.

Transportation program:

  • Administered by Brownstown Township Recreation Department.
  • Transportation provided by Brownstown Township Senior Bus and Downriver Cab.
  • Transportation is made available by grants from SMART.

Brownstown Senior Bus

Available for:

  • Transportation to Brownstown Community Center for senior programs and activities organized by the Center (lunch, shopping, trips, volunteer opportunities, meetings, etc.)
  • Transportation to the Township offices.
  • Transportation for wheelchair bound residents to appointments.
  • The senior bus may be used by seniors who can drive, however, priority will be given to those who cannot.

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday Friday 8:30 am - 12:00 pm & 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
  • Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance.

Type of Service:

  • Curb to Curb
  • Wheelchair Lift Equipped
  • Passengers must be able to get to and from the bus unassisted. If assistance is needed, a caregiver/companion must be with the passenger at all times.

Cost:

  • $1.00 round trip to/from home/Senior Center or activity
  • $1.00 round trip for shopping trips
  • $2.00 each way for appointments (available for wheelchair bound only)

Downriver Cab

Available for:

  • Transportation to medical and dental appointments, hair appointments, pharmacy, banking, and shopping for seniors and the disabled who are unable to drive.
  • This service is not for transportation to the airport.
  • Hours of Operation:
  • Monday Saturday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
  • Reservations for transportation to an appointment must be made 24 hours in advance.
  • For transportation to a place with no appointment (bank, pharmacy, etc.), you may call for transportation as needed, but keep in mind that there may be a wait. Advance reservations are preferred.

Type of Service:

  • Curb to Curb
  • Passengers must be able to get to/from and in/out of the taxi unassisted. If assistance is needed, a caregiver/companion must be with the passenger at all times.

Cost:

  • $2.00 each way per passenger
  • $1.50 per mile for each additional mile outside of service area.
  • Tipping is at your option.
